Support grows for early warning systems initiative

Switzerland ?has announced a major contribution to an international initiative to strengthen early warning systems in vulnerable low-income countries? to support climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction and sustainable development. The announcement of? 9 million Swiss francs in new funding came at the United Nations climate change conference in Katowice, Poland (COP24).

On November 30, FY-2H and FY-3D satellites have been officially delivered to China Meteorological Administration (CMA).?These two satellites have crystallized the latest achievements made in China?s independent scientific innovation, which will further enhance the integrated observation and application service capabilities of China?s meteorological satellites. In the meanwhile, as the member of global earth observation operational satellite sequence, they will play an instrumental role in serving ?Belt and Road? Developing leadership and management skills of senior management of NMHS has been identified as a priority of WMO. In support of such training needs, the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) sponsored and conducted the inaugural Leadership and Management Programme for Senior Management of NMHS in RA II and RA V in Singapore on 10 ? 14 September 2018. The Programme was organised in collaboration with the WMO Regional Office for Asia and the South West Pacific and the WMO Education and Training Office (ETO).?

Global CO2 emissions are expected to rise by more than 2% in 2018 because of renewed growth in coal use, and continued growth in oil and gas use, according to the latest data from the Global Carbon Budget.?Emissions rose 1.6% in 2017 after a temporary slowdown from 2014 to 2016, according to the Global Carbon Project. This year?s publication included contributions from 76 scientists from 53 research institutions, including from the World Climate Research Programme community.

2018 UK summer heatwave made thirty times more likely due to climate change - UK Met Office

Human-induced climate change has made the 2018 record-breaking UK summer temperatures about 30 times more likely than it would be naturally, the Met Office will say at CoP24 - in Katowice, Poland ? later today (Thursday 6 December 2018).?Professor Peter Stott is a world-leading expert on climate attribution based at the Met Office and the University of Exeter in the UK. He said: ?Our provisional study compared computer models based on today?s climate with those of the natural climate we would have had without human-induced emissions. We find that the intensity of this summer?s heatwave is around 30 times more likely than would have been the case without climate change.?

Experts, staff of the Fiji Meteorological Service and Disaster Management Office met in Nadi, Fiji from 12 to 16 November 2018, to discuss the implementation of the Flash Flood Guidance System (FFGS). The meeting discussed and developed a work plan for the implementation of FijiFFGS, a name chosen to ensure ownership of the project, and show that its applications are specifically targeting the islands of Fiji.? ??
