Support grows for early warning systems initiative

Switzerland ?has announced a major contribution to an international initiative to strengthen early warning systems in vulnerable low-income countries? to support climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction and sustainable development. The announcement of? 9 million Swiss francs in new funding came at the United Nations climate change conference in Katowice, Poland (COP24).

Global CO2 emissions are expected to rise by more than 2% in 2018 because of renewed growth in coal use, and continued growth in oil and gas use, according to the latest data from the Global Carbon Budget.?Emissions rose 1.6% in 2017 after a temporary slowdown from 2014 to 2016, according to the Global Carbon Project. This year?s publication included contributions from 76 scientists from 53 research institutions, including from the World Climate Research Programme community.

2018 UK summer heatwave made thirty times more likely due to climate change - UK Met Office

Human-induced climate change has made the 2018 record-breaking UK summer temperatures about 30 times more likely than it would be naturally, the Met Office will say at CoP24 - in Katowice, Poland ? later today (Thursday 6 December 2018).?Professor Peter Stott is a world-leading expert on climate attribution based at the Met Office and the University of Exeter in the UK. He said: ?Our provisional study compared computer models based on today?s climate with those of the natural climate we would have had without human-induced emissions. We find that the intensity of this summer?s heatwave is around 30 times more likely than would have been the case without climate change.?
