Geneva, 13 June 2019 (WMO) - The World Meteorological Congress today elected?Gerhard Adrian of Germany?as President of the World Meteorological Organization for a four-year term in office. Mr Adrian is President of the Deutscher Wetterdienst (German Weather Service), a position he has held since 2010.

The World Meteorological Organization has therefore created a WMO Catalogue for Climate Data as a trustworthy source of internationally recognized datasets. It has also reinforced its support for historical weather stations which contain records which are vital for monitoring long-term climate change.

An outstanding heat wave occurred in Israel on May 22-24th. Extremely high temperaures were recorded on May 23rd and 24th, some of them were record-breaking. On May 23rd, temperatures reached 43-45?C in many areas: the Coastal Plain, the Judean Foothills, the northern Negev, the Jordan Valley and the Arava.?In the Northern Valleys and the northern Coastal Plain 39-42?C were recorded and in the mountains temperatures reached 35-37?C.?The heat wave continued on May 24th becoming even more intense in the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea area and the northern Arava with highs of 45-48?C.
